Health and Wellness and Weight in America

The number one health and wellness issue and around the world will soon be weight. Excess weight is a pervasive health issue that has a direct relationship to numerous disease states.

Health Risks of Obesity (according to Health Canada)

"If you are overweight or obese, you may be at risk for a wide range of serious diseases and conditions including:

  • hypertension or high blood pressure;
  • coronary heart disease;
  • Type 2 diabetes;
  • stroke;
  • gallbladder disease;
  • osteoarthritis;
  • sleep apnea and other breathing problems;
  • some cancers such as breast, colon and endometrial cancer; and
  • mental health problems, such as low self-esteem and depression.

Obesity is one of the leading factors in heart disease and stroke, as well as in Type 2 diabetes, which affects an estimated 1.8 million Canadians. If you are overweight, you are at high risk of becoming obese, which can more seriously affect your health."

You really don't need a government study to realize that there's a huge weight issue facing Americans. Just go to the mall, the beach, the baseball game and you'll see overweight people all around you. It's a fact that severely overweight people do not even leave their homes so you don't even see these people on a regular basis.

US News published an article on Jan 2/09 entitled

  "The State of America's Health as Obama takes Office" On obesity, it states:

"Our expanding girth is America's most visible health problem. Not only are most adults too heavy, but obesity rates for children have more than doubled in the past 30 years. Excess weight is a significant factor in four of the six leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Obesity has fueled a 45 percent rise in diabetes over the past 20 years; someone born in 2000 has a 1 in 3 chance of developing the disease. "

Obesity in America is by no means a new issue in the press.

In 2004, Time Magazine published an article called

  " How We Grew So Big"

".....the actual numbers are shocking. Fully two-thirds of U.S. adults are officially overweight. and about half of those have graduated to full blown obesity. The rates for African Americans and Latinos are even higher.."

I his book, "Microtrends", Mark J. Penn notes that while many people acknowledge obesity as a huge issue no one seems to make an issue about the fact that obesity is not evenly distributed in the population.

"While we are all generally getting fatter, the real burden of morbid obesity is falling disproportionately on one group of Americans: black women. According to a 2002 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), women in general are about twice as likely as men to be morbidly obese, but a sobering 1 in 6 black women are morbidly obese---3x the rate of any other sub group" This has massive implications for the black community and nobody is addressing this on a national basis.

This obesity trend is not going to disappear any time soon without a radical departure in how we habitually eat. It should also be noted that this obesity issue is fairly new in the grand scheme of things. According to Statistics Canada, a Federal government department, Canadians increased their caloric intake by 18% over a 10 year period from 1992 to 2002. Dr Youfa Wang, lead researcher at Johns Hopkins University, analyzed over 20 medical weght related studies and came to the conclusion that "Obesity is a public health crisis. If we continue to become overweight or obese at our current pace, by 2015 75% of adults and nearly 24% of U.S. children and adolescents will be overweight or obese."

Even Disney is indirectly trying to alert the World to the growing Worldwide obesity issue. Just watch a recent movie called Wall-E where grossly overweight human characters depend on mechanized chairs and robots to fulfill routine daily tasks. It also has a lot to say about our ever growing garbage issue.

 Obese People are Targets.

Paul Zane Pilzer in his new and revised book called "The Wellness Revolution" has some devatating news for obese people. Some keys point are:

The obese are actively targeted by junk food companies because it is much easier to sell to existing customers (those who weigh over 200 pounds and earn less than $35,000 per year) than it is to find new customers.

Junk food has a chemical make up that turns off our natural instinct to be satiated. With junk food food alolics just want to keep eating more and more. This results in them buying more products that improves the bottom line of the junk food manufacturers.

Being fat is now restricts social and economic opportunities. Jobs are hard to find. "Rich fat man" has become an oxymoron and "poor and fat" have become synonymous" page 18 Wellness Revolution.

You have Weight Loss Alternatives

There are very practical things you can do to reduce food intake. One is drink more water. People sometimes confuse a hungry feeling with the need for water. You should be drinking 8 glasses or more of pure water--not coke or coffee. If you don't you are probably dehydrated. The body craves water so people could be misinterpreting the signal from the brain. (Most food also contains water). Water is the body's number one detoxifier which gets your bowels moving.

Other practical things you can do is use smaller dinner plates, eliminate leftovers and eat lots and lots of vegetables. You can also divide your meal into courses like soup, salad and fruit for dessert and take more time to eat.

Avoid "all you can eat buffets" and split entrees at restaurants. I know none of this is easy but as the movie "What about Bob?" says "baby steps" are important achievements towards a solution for you.

You may also want to try this natural alternative from a highly credible company.
